Highlights from the “Visible Cultural Heritages – Traditional Costumes of Romania and Japan”
Curated by Conservators Emerita from the Department of Textile Conservation at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Florica Zaharia and Midori Sato, this exhibition was on display at the Muzeul Textilelor in Baiţa, Romania from 2023-2024.
The exhibition—accompanied by a catalog—focused on the display of textiles and costumes of Romania and Japan in a comparative format based on discussions over their nearly forty-year friendship.
The authors’ focus is to present the complexity of textile materials and related technologies pertaining to each culture reflected in the costumes and influenced by geo-climactic conditions, natural resources, symbolistic and aesthetic trends along with practical necessity and social stratification.
The publication is written in Romanian and English with beautifully depicted images.
This talk will be presented by Midori Sato and Kristine Kamiya (Conservator, Department of Textile Conservation).
Registration is recommended.
